The Wedding is over – what are you going to do with your Bridesmaid Dress?

Its June, and the start of the wedding season. If you’re a bridesmaid in June, there are (hopefully) all but a few details outstanding. Leaving you with a question – what are you going to do with your bridesmaid dress when the wedding is over?

The bouquet has been tossed, the cake has been enjoyed, and the bride and groom have left to start the honeymoon…your role as a bridesmaid is officially over, and now you can relax. But wait a second. What about your dress?

Sell it

While most companies won’t accept returns, there are more popping up that do buy back bridesmaid dresses used for the one day only. So long as they’re not stained or torn, and are kept in great condition, selling off your bridesmaid dress to someone else is perfectly acceptable. You may find you prefer to do this for some extra money to make up what you spent on prior to the wedding. If you’re wondering what other people may think, don’t. Honestly, the bride won’t be upset if you sell your bridesmaid dress off—I think she’d be more upset if you left it in the closet and never wore it again!

Donate it

More and more consignment shops and organizations are popping up to help other bridesmaids looking for a new dress. If your body size accommodates another similar one on a different woman, then why not give yourself a sense of satisfaction knowing that your bridesmaid dress isn’t going to waste? Donating it can also help a girl find the perfect dress for other special occasions such as prom.

Pass it on

Is someone else you know becoming a bridesmaid? Maybe your dress will fit a niece in your family who’s looking forward to prom? In these cases, and more, pass the dress on. Who knows, maybe they’re in dire straits with finances and can’t afford a new dress, but they really need one.

Re-accessorize

Maybe you wore certain accessories to the wedding and thought to yourself, “This would go perfect with my regular jewelry!” By all means, re-accessorize your bridesmaid dress for another night! Maybe an anniversary with your husband?

Redesign it

Some bridesmaid dresses look like they were made for just that reason alone…heck, maybe you’re less than happy with how it looks post-wedding. If you’re handy with a sewing machine or have the skills, you have the power at your fingertips to redesign your bridesmaid dress. Some examples include taking the top half off and sewing on an old shirt with the skirt part. Or do vice versa and sew the sequined top to a solid-coloured skirt and make a whole new dress for evening wear and dinner out.

Rewear it!

The wedding may be over, but if you wore a convertible dress, there are plenty more opportunities to use your bridesmaid dress post-wedding.

  • Maternity
  • The office/work
