Rain on Your Wedding Day Dressing & Styling Tips

“It’s like rain on your wedding day” is not just the popular lyric from Alanis Morissette’s song “Ironic”. Most brides usually book their wedding in the summertime to avoid rain from happening at all, or they adore the outdoors scenery that their booked venues have to offer. For some reason it never occurs to brides that there are some benefits to a rainy day wedding, or that they do indeed need to have a backup plan just in case (hint: you really should, ladies). Rain on your wedding day doesn’t have to be soggy or unpleasant! Here are some tips on how to dress and how to prepare for rainy weather at the wedding.

Why some brides consider it a big deal

Rain on your wedding day can be a horrifying thought to most brides, usually for the following reasons:
  • A lot of money is spent on hairstyles for brides. Nothing says frizzy like wet hair after being exposed to moisture upon drying off. If the bride’s hair gets wet the moisture will react poorly with the hair products used. So, no go for being rained on!
  • Clothing materials and stains can happen from rain too. Depending on the length of your wedding dress, the last thing you should do is drag the train along the ground while outside. Mud and moisture can ruin dress materials that were costly to begin with!
  • Not all shoes are made equal. Some of the fanciest shoes for weddings on the market are high heels meant for dry, flat roads and areas. There’s nothing more uncomfortable than getting the insides of your shoes wet (especially if you have to stand in them for hours on end! Feet can get so itchy as a result of soggy socks!).
So, bottom line, rain on your wedding day can turn a look from fab to drab in seconds. But dressing for it properly and preparing in advance can help.

Dressing tips

Covering the chest may be the most comfortable thing you and your bridesmaids can do in case of rain. Watch these videos we’ve made on how to style your bridesmaid dress’s sleeves for full frontal coverage, or how to look formal and stylish without exposing more than you’re comfortable with! If you need help with getting these styles done, Emily is more than happy to help dress you and your girls up. Another dressing tip is to keep the train coming but also from derailing—by that we mean have one of your bridesmaids help to carry the train on your wedding dress (if there is one). Ask if you can make the train detachable for even better ease of travel and style.

Accessorize for the big day!

Are your bridesmaids wearing two-tone dresses for the wedding? Suggest adding an additional tube top on the outside of the dress underneath the bust. This will also draw attention away from the waist and other problem areas your bridesmaids would rather not have people notice! When it comes to your hair and makeup, practicality is the name of the game when it comes to accessorizing.
  • Wear waterproof makeup and get your bridesmaids to wear and provide it also in case of an emergency. No one likes runny mascara on the face when it’s wet out!
  • For your hair, a messy bun can look both trendy and in style. It’ll help make your hair look less frizzy too.
  • If you’d like to wear a flower crown, make sure it’s durable enough that it won’t bend or break from water.
  • Feel free to get creative with your shoewear! Some rain boots can look super cute and fancy if you’re expecting it to be wet out. Hunter gloss boots are also a very trendy and stylish look for country and rustic weddings also. Encourage your guests to wear similar footwear. Be sure to bring a backup pair of shoes once it’s time to hit the dance floor.

It’s just a little rain

Not every bride hates the rain. Some may even find it romantic! Think of those candid moments when you and your boyfriend both ducked and ran for shelter when caught up in a storm, or maybe your first kiss took place while rain fell on you both. Why not relive that romantic moment after you’ve exchanged your vows? Did you also know that rain on a wedding day is actually considered to be good luck? In some cultures rain during a wedding ceremony symbolizes fertility and cleansing, making way for prosperity. Looking at the weather from this perspective, rain is actually the best sign for your marriage! There are a few other really cool ways you can prepare not just yourself but everyone for rain on your wedding day:
  • Contact your venue hosts and vendors. Everyone has had experience with lousy weather on special occasions like this one. They may actually prefer you to keep them informed!
  • Keep your guests notified and suggest that they also dress accordingly for rain.
  • Everyone loves getting something for free! Offer everyone an umbrella the day of your wedding so that in the event they missed the memo, they’ll stay dry.
  • Who doesn’t love a hot drink on a cold and soggy day? Some weddings offer a hot chocolate bar, hot apple cider, and extra blankets for those who really can’t stand the cold. If you can organize your wedding around this sort of thing (maybe for a fall wedding setup?), then go for it.
Honestly, the best way to handle rain on your wedding day is to take it in stride. Having a backup plan in case the forecast changes from sun to rain will guarantee that no matter what kind of style or outfits you plan on using, or whether or not the wedding will take place indoors, it’ll be a beautiful and memorable day for everyone involved.
