Winter Wedding Dressing & Styling Tips for Bridesmaids

Winter is such a magical time of the year for weddings! There are fun holidays to have a wedding around (Christmas, Hanukkah, and New Year’s Eve to name a couple), snow can add a sense of wonder and awe to your ceremony, or maybe your first date took place this time of the year and you want to honour that by tying the knot. Whatever the reason may be, you should celebrate your winter wedding in style. These winter wedding tips apply to both your bridal party and yourself! If you’re the one shopping for bridesmaid dresses or you’re looking for a dress that will suit your needs while also helping you stay comfortable and warm, you’re going to need a bridesmaid dress that will help you look fabulous. Here are some handy winter wedding dress and styling tips for bridesmaids.

When’s the wedding?

December, January, and February are all decent winter months for weddings. It’s worth noting that each month has a certain theme of their own in terms of fashion and colour options. Some brides center their wedding day around a certain time of the year, Christmas being a good example. I’m sure this will influence your choice of colours too! Other special occasions that are in winter are not strictly limited to Christmas, either. Other holidays you may be considering choosing colours for your wedding include:
  • Chinese New Year
  • New Year’s Day
  • Valentine’s Day
  • Hanukkah
  • Kwanzaa
  • New Year’s Eve
Each of these holidays have their own guidelines and suggestions on colours for fabric and dresses too.

Popular Winter Wedding Colours

Naturally this changes from year to year, but some colours have stuck around and stood the test of time and again, year after year. Some popular winter wedding classics include:
  • Red. Usually the shades are vibrant and bright, like the berries from holly and poinsettias.
  • Green. Dark shades such as evergreen can make certain other neutrals pop.
  • Cream. When paired with evergreen, this adds a real sense of elegance to your bridesmaid dress.
  • White. A classic neutral that goes with everything, especially in winter!
  • Blue. Usually darker shades, such as navy and midnight, are chosen for winter weddings.
  • Brown. Another great neutral that you can pair with cream-coloured and evergreen shades.
  • Black. Because sometimes a dress that goes with everything is your best bet.
  • Gold. Pairing with white decorations can add some extra glamour to your winter wedding.
  • Silver. Best when mixed with blues and whites, both in terms of jewelry and decorations.
Other popular colours for winter weddings include pale and blush pinks, mint green, and teal.

Styling Tips

  • Floor-length dresses may be your best length given that most winter weddings take place indoors and in the evening. If you’re having your wedding in the afternoon, go for a knee-length bridesmaid dress. For more tips on the lengths, be sure to check out our previous blog post for reference!
  • A sleeved convertible bridesmaid dress with a criss-cross back can show off your ladies without removing that sense of elegance.
  • A twisted strap back is useful if you’re more comfortable with showing some skin while indoors.
  • Strapless is the most accommodating if you wear a strapless bra to an indoor winter wedding. You can switch this style to strapped if you’re going outside where it’s cold, or stick with strapless if the wedding is indoors where it’s cozy and warm.

Accessory Ideas

What’s a winter wedding without some decorations? These ideas apply to your shoes, flower bouquets, and other wintry ideas.
  • Scarves can help your bridal party both look unique and stay warm! Choose different colours compared to the bridesmaids for your maid/matron of honour and the mother of the bride (let the bride have the colour that stands out the most! For example this could be her something blue if she doesn’t have any other accessories, or make it an extra sparkly scarf for the occasion).
  • For shoes, closed toes are a must whether you want high heels or flats. We don’t want your pedicure to be rained or snowed on!
  • Our Love U infinity wrap dresses can also be ordered with sparkly brooches. These are circular with sparkling stones included so you can turn your convertible dress from casual to formal in seconds. The great thing about these accessories is that they can be usable for any wedding any season of the year, not only winter. Make sure the straps are inserted in a way so that your bridesmaid dress style looks natural.
  • Santa hats can add a sense of festivity if the wedding takes place around Christmas! If you’re concerned about your haircut, opt in for alternative Santa ideas such as red gloves trimmed with white fluff, or a belt and white bracelets with your red bridesmaid dress.
When it comes to bouquets, these festive flowers and plants should suffice:
  • Holly
  • Poinsettias
  • Red roses
  • White roses (mixed with red ones)
  • Wintergreen tree branches
  • Camellias
  • Mistletoe
  • Amaryllis
  • Ivy
  • Pine cones
  • Pussy willows
  • Baby’s breath
Some flowers recommended if it’s for Hanukkah include white lilies, white roses and carnations, and blue delphiniums. While there are several other options available, these are considered to be the best colours and flowers for the occasion.

Celebrate Your Own Winter Tradition!

Some winter weddings come with really creative ideas, from the refreshments to the decorations to the accessories you can wear. Red and gold can emulate the idea of a roaring fire; mistletoe can make things romantic (especially for photo ops!); and there’s nothing like hot cocoa or mulled apple cider on a cold winter’s day. Winter means something different to everyone, wedding or no wedding. Maybe for you it means snow, or it means finding comfort in each other’s company even when it’s dark and cold. Maybe you both have a favourite holiday movie you want to honour, or you have a favourite activity you want to share with your bridesmaids and guests. Whatever winter activity you and your betrothed love to cherish together, it’s a great idea to honour that at your wedding.
