Harry Potter Halloween Costume Ideas Using Love U Designs Wrap Dresses

Love Halloween? Love Harry Potter? So do we! This is an awesome time of the year for us to dress up as our favourite characters from movies, books, TV shows—you name it! If you weren’t aware already, Love U’s leader Emily is a HUGE Harry Potter fan! (Her house is Gryffindor, if you were curious. She made her own themed robes and everything!). So today we’re going to share some of her fondness for the series with you by providing you with these Harry Potter Halloween costume ideas, using wrap dresses from Love U Designs.

Characters to Base Your Wrap Dress Around

The entire book series has an incredible cast of characters, good and evil and neutral, witch and wizard and muggle alike. If you want to dress up as one of the characters, here’s a list of ideas we can suggest:
  • Hermione Granger
  • Luna Lovegood
  • Professor McGonagall
  • Ginny Weasley
  • Cho Chang
  • Molly Weasley
  • Fleur Delacour
  • Rita Skeeter
  • Madam Hooch
  • Petunia Dursley
  • Umbridge
  • Beatrix Lestrange
  • Tonks, a.k.a. Nymphadora Tonks (you can choose from all sorts of great and fun hair colours for this one! Violet, for one example, or bubblegum pink. If you can pull off the short spiky hairstyle, go for it!!)
  • Many, many, many more
Alternatively you could simply go as yourself, but as a Hogwarts student or a quidditch player, or perhaps you’d really like to get fancy and pretend you’re heading to the Yule Ball (more on that below).

House Colours

For those who aren’t familiar with the series or what house colours means, here’s the lowdown. Every student at Hogwarts in their first year undergoes what’s called the Sorting Ceremony. In the ceremony students put on the Sorting Hat (a talking witch’s hat, basically) who then determines which of the four main houses of Hogwarts they will be assigned to. These houses in question are Gryffindor, Hufflepuff, Ravenclaw, and Slytherin. Each house has their own history and each student possesses a trait that the heads of these houses prized the most. For Gryffindor, it was bravery and courage; for Ravenclaw, it was wit, wisdom, and knowledge; for Hufflepuff, it was loyalty; and for Slytherin, it was ambition. Alternatively, you could also find out which house you belong to on Pottermore.com. The site was made with sorting people into their respective houses in mind, as well as determining your Patronus (protector from Dementors) and your familiar i.e. an owl, a cat, or a toad. Now, on to the fun part—figuring out the dresses! This will be the base of your costume if you want to emulate your house’s colours. Alternatively, you could pair off any one of our black convertible dresses with your house colours! Choose from any one of the following:

Styling Suggestions

The Harry Potter series takes place in Britain, so the school uniforms were designed to look that way too. Our wrap dresses may not have the upper collar, but that shouldn’t stop you from nailing the Hogwarts uniform costume!
  • Pair one of our white mini-length wrap dresses with black pants and a robe—available in queen size, plus size, or regular size. Alternatively, use a plaid mini skirt or black pants to give the top half of your wrap dress a Hogwarts uniform look that is uniquely you.
  • Though our dress photos usually consist of the non-sleeved appearance, the beauty of our wrap dresses is you can extend the straps so they become sleeved dresses instead! Check out our videos on how to add sleeves to your Hogwarts style.
In terms of lengths, you have your options there as well. Go for knee-length wrap dresses if you want to pull off the more uniform look and also get the most convertible style of wrap dress for your Harry Potter costume. Choose mini-length if you would rather pull off the shirt-and-pants uniform look. Try our floor-length dresses if you plan to look ready for the Yule Ball (read more below), or if you would like to emulate the idea of robes purely designed for witchcraft and wizardry.

The Yule Ball

While this sounds more like a Christmas dress-up idea than a Halloween one, you can still pull off a look from the Yule Ball from Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire using Love U’s dresses (and besides, like we said, you can go as whoever you want this holiday!).
  • Fleur Delacour – at the Yule Ball in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, her dress was of “silver-grey satin”. (Idea: don our floor-length shimmer grey dress and pair it with delicate silver or platinum jewelry.)
  • Parvati Patil (Yule Ball) – “shocking pink, hair braided with gold, gold bracelets on her wrists”. (Idea: try our fuschia knee-length regular size dress or our pink knee-length regular size dress with gold jewelry and hair accessories.)
  • Padma Patil (Yule Ball) – “bright turquoise” (idea: while not exactly turquoise it’s certainly bright! Go with our Tiffany Blue knee-length regular size dress and pair it with your fanciest jewelry.)
  • Not available (sadly, but maybe in the future!) at our shop is Hermione’s Yule Ball robes, which were described in the book as made of “a floaty, periwinkle blue material”. If you have periwinkle coloured scarves, a coat, a shawl, or an accessory that best describes Hermione’s robes, try pairing these off with our Cloud Blue knee-length regular size dress. You may end up with something that’s uniquely you and stays true to Hermione’s character and look!
Alternatively, you could opt in for any one of Love U’s solid or print dresses and go as yourself while also donning a wand or a broomstick to get the point across.

Accessories

Harry Potter House Badges No Halloween costume is complete without a few accessories that indicate who you’re dressed up as in seconds. While unfortunately Love U Designs does not sell the following, you are likely to find several alternative ideas online.
  • Pocket watches. If you’re looking for that perfect necklace option instead of the regular kind.
  • Ties. The kind meant to go with suits or, in this case, uniforms. Try to find ties that suit your house colours.
  • Glasses. Because it’s okay to dress as Harry Potter himself if you want!
  • Earrings. Because you can.
  • Necklaces. The symbol of the Deathly Hallows is a well-known one even to most people who aren’t familiar with the series. Several stores online offer this in the form of a necklace, which you can pair off with your school uniform.
  • Hats. The classic pointed witch’s hat was a staple of the Hogwarts uniform. Alternatively, try to find a browner, more wrinkled witch’s hat if you want more of the Sorting Hat, and you could say you’re a first year student at Hogwarts being chosen, if anyone asks. For a more Professor McGonagall styled hat, pin a few fake feathers to make it look like her hat from the first movie (the Philosopher’s Stone).
  • Wands. A must! Even if you just pick up a stick in the yard, you can pass it off as a wand (be sure it hasn’t been anywhere it shouldn’t be first, or that you’re allergic to the tree it came from!).
  • Robes. They should be floor-length, but not so long as to make you trip while walking! Opt in for dark green or black if you want to look like Professor McGonagall.
  • Stuffed animals. A few popular ones from the books include Crookshanks, Hermione’s cranky ginger cat and familiar; a snowy owl, i.e. Hedwig; a toad, if you want to go the Neville Longbottom route; a black dog, if you appreciate Sirius Black; a dragon, if you’re like Hagrid and love even the toothiest and most aggressive types of beasts. Maybe there are even hippogriff options out there like Buckbeak?
  • Broomsticks. For only the most experienced Quidditch players. If you can catch the Golden Snitch in time, do it!
  • Badges. Like the ones pictured above. If you can find them, pair off one of these with your designated house at Hogwarts to really get across the idea that you’re a student enrolled there.
  • Shoes. Use your favourite fancy pair of high heels for the Yule Ball. For uniforms go with British style loafers in brown or black (these are the best neutrals to accompany your uniform costume).
The best thing about our dresses is you can wear them again even after Halloween is over! Whether you want to dress up or not, we’re sure your Harry Potter-themed costume will be a smashing success! Check out our online shop for more dresses and feel free to contact Emily if you want to talk more about the dresses, or about Harry Potter! Happy Halloween!
