First of all let us say, congratulations if you’re getting married! There’s obviously already so much to plan for, and we’re here to hopefully help as far as the wedding dress, your bridesmaids’ dresses, and even the mother of the bride’s dress colours are concerned.
With so many hundreds of colours to choose from, the sheer amount of choice you have can feel pretty intimidating! With that in mind, here are some of our tips on how you can choose the best colours for your bridesmaid dresses and even for the wedding.
Ask your Fiancé/Fiancée
It’s very easy to forget that your wedding day is about you and your fiancé or fiancée—not about what your family wants, or what your best friend’s second cousin wants. So why not ask your fiancé or fiancée which colours they think would work the best? Especially if almost all of the decision making has been on your part; it’s a good starting point to a long and lasting marriage if you and your partner work together on how you want the big day to look in terms of colours. This tip may not help out for every bride out there, but it’s a great starting point.
Seasons of the Year
Which season does the wedding day take place in? Spring, summer, fall, winter…these all bring to the mind a rainbow of possibilities. One way to approach the colours for your wedding and the clothes are to visualize and imagine the tastes and settings you’d most commonly find in each season.
For example, spring is a very floral season; it brings to mind greens and pastels, and for some brides it means Easter. You are entering a brand new chapter of your life, and are born anew with your significant other except instead of boyfriend and girlfriend, you’re husband and wife.
Summer can make you think of ice cream, sea salt, and the beach. Fall is a very warm, very cozy season, bringing to mind roaring fires, pumpkin pie, and holidays like Halloween and Thanksgiving. Winter can mean Christmas, New Year’s Eve, and glittering snow.
Consider all of these things, and depending on the season your wedding takes place, try selecting dress colours and styles that best reflect these sensations and experiences.
The Venue
You not only have to consider the when of your wedding, but also the where of it. Is it taking place indoors or outdoors? Will the background be of the forest, the beach, in the city, or in the country? Really think about the setting here since, after all, not only do the colours of the dresses have to work out but also they should be considered for your wedding photos. Outdoor vs. indoor will also determine what you will want to wear because who knows what the weather can be that day!
Check out the Trends
If you’d prefer getting your colour choices from real design professionals, there’s plenty of choice in that too. Pantone in particular is one who pretty much is the biggest name in terms of colour trends (we even wrote a blog post about it! You can check it out here). If 2019 is the year you’re getting married, you may adore their colour of the year which is living coral, or you may want to consider some of their other trending choices instead.
Again, think of the venue and season in which you’re getting married; do any of the trends that Pantone describes suit what you have in mind? If so, go for it! If not, there’s nothing wrong with continuing to look for some popular bridesmaid dresses, styles, and colours.
Keep Your Bridesmaids in Mind
Just like every bride, every bridesmaid is different when it comes to their size, style, and even their financial status. Not every budget will fit the bridesmaid as, traditionally, it is up to them to pick out their dress. If it’s easiest, you can pick out the dress colours, or you can decide on which colours you like the best and then get their input. Sometimes getting the colours that will look really awesome involves team effort.
Feeling Creative?
Some of the best weddings we’ve seen have some really creative choices in bridesmaid and wedding dresses! In regards to
wrap dresses specifically, you can expect to see your bridesmaids rocking some pretty cool and unique looks without making them look stylish but feel uncomfortable in the process. With so many colour options and unique styles, the wrap dress is great for all sorts of venues, for all four seasons, and for all types of women!
