Who Buys the Bridesmaid Dresses? And Other FAQs about Weddings You Were Wondering About (But No One Tells You)

If you’re reading this and you’re the one getting married, congratulations! If you’re reading this and you’re going to be a part of the wedding, then welcome! We’re sure you have a lot of questions about who to go to for the cake or in the invitations, but one thing we’re sure you have a lot to ask about are things like “Who buys the bridesmaid dresses?” Trouble is, not many people tell you right off the bat! So here is a lowdown of some of the most frequently asked questions about bridesmaid dresses, wedding dresses, and even convertible wrap dresses you may be wondering about (but no one tells you).

Who buys the bridesmaid dresses?

Traditionally, it is the bridesmaids who choose the style of dress themselves. However, you as the bride are in charge of the colours for their dresses (this would be the easiest thing to do). If you are sticking with this method, then you are likely going to have to find your bridesmaids some dresses that they can wear again. Thankfully, that’s what makes wrap dresses for weddings so great in the first place! They’re all about versatility and convenience.

How do I choose the colours?

Depending on whether you’ve decided the bridesmaids need to choose the dress themselves or not, if you do decide to stick with that rule then the colours need to be multi-purposeful—i.e. don’t pick colours that don’t suit multiple uses of clothing. You can also check out our blog post on that very subject: How to Choose the Colours for Your Bridesmaids’ Dresses & the Wedding.

Where can I buy dresses for the wedding?

Why not start with us? We have an online shop as well as a specific page regarding bridesmaids and weddings that you can explore!

How early should I order bridesmaid dresses?

It’s recommended that you order your bridesmaid dress 4 to 6 months prior to the official wedding date, or even as soon as the wedding day date has been confirmed if you wish. That way any alterations needing to be made to the dresses and any other arrangements can be made and no rush jobs are done.

How much is too much for a bridesmaid dress?

This will depend greatly on what kind of a budget you are hoping to stick with and also how much you’re willing to spend on not only your bridesmaid dress but also the accessories that go with it, such as shoes and jewelry. The sweet spot for a dress alone is usually under $200 or even $150 (if you can—again, it depends on your budget).

What should I wear when bridesmaid dress shopping?

Wear comfortable clothing, something you can easily shift in and out of when you’re shopping for your bridesmaid dress. A zip hoodie is pretty easy to get in and out of in a pinch (much more so than a pullover hoodie!). Avoid wearing shoes with shoelaces, tight-fitting boots, and jeans.

What kinds of accessories should I wear at the wedding? (I’m the bride)

Perhaps you’ve heard of this traditional phrase when it comes to weddings: “Something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue.” This is very commonly advised to new brides in North America, and the possibilities for accessories and styles that accommodate this advice are not only vast but amazing! Blue could mean the earrings, necklace, gloves, bracelets, and even veils you decide to put on for your wedding, or all or one of those accessories can be borrowed—or both borrowed and blue! Something old should definitely be a family heirloom such as—maybe—your engagement ring, or the wedding ring from your betrothed, or a necklace, or a brooch, or earrings. Something new is very easy—your wedding dress counts! Depending on where you’re getting married and what culture your heritage belongs to (for example, if you’re Chinese or East Indian), this phrase can also probably help in some cultures but not others; the colour choices and other cultural differences apply and differ from tradition to tradition. Each of our cultures has something unique to offer, especially when it comes to weddings. Take a look at some background research and see if you can find some ideas.

What kinds of accessories should I wear at the wedding? (I’m a bridesmaid)

A brooch, bracelets, necklaces, and earrings are all pretty solid accessories to go for if you’re a bridesmaid. If the wedding takes place indoors, you probably don’t need a coat, but you will want to carry one with you or even an umbrella (you never know!) if the wedding takes place outdoors.

Who throws the bridal shower?

Usually it has been the maid of honour, the in-laws, the wedding party, or a family friend who hosts and organizes the bridal shower. However, the host can be anyone who the bride is very close to, whether it’s her mother, her best friend, her sister, or anyone else she wants to host.

Who throws the bachelorette party?

Again, virtually anyone who the bride is very close to can be host to her bachelorette party, or stagette as it’s sometimes referred to. In some cases it’s usually been the bride’s sister or best friend who organizes and hosts. Overall, it’s best that this night not only accommodates the bride but also her bridesmaids in terms of fun!

Whether you are one of the bridesmaids who wants to support your best friend or you’re the bride to be, you deserve to look and feel good on such a special occasion, and a wrap dress can help you achieve that wonderful feeling!
