’Tis the season of spring cleaning! I know, I know, you probably hate cleaning and are dreading the idea of purging your bedroom closet (which we’re going to focus on in this article—leave the rest of your home for another time!).
Spring cleaning can help you figure out which clothes you want to keep or give away when the warmer weather kicks in. Now is the perfect time to hang up your winter coat and put on a springy one. We’re going to help you figure out how to best clean your closet.
Must-follow tips
Have you watched “Tidying Up with Marie Kondo” on Netflix? If so then you’ve already guessed our next tip: following Marie’s advice. Put everything from your closet onto one pile, and go through each item one at a time. If an item gives you what Marie Kondo calls “a spark of joy”, it’s worth holding onto. If it doesn’t, say thank you to the clothing and let it go. Another, massive tip to follow in addition to Marie Kondo: be completely objective when examining each item. I know you probably spent a lot of money on your clothes, but some of them are made for the sake of style over comfort and not both. You also need to be consider the functionality of the clothing rather than only the fashion aspect of the item. Have things like empty boxes on hand. You may find them to be really helpful when cleaning up and re-organizing the things in your closet.Questions to ask
The following questions can apply to just about anything in your closet: shoes, coats, scarves, and so on.- When was the last time you wore this (insert clothing or accessory here)?
- If your answer to the last question is over a year ago, then what are the odds you are going to wear it now?
- Can you see yourself wearing (insert item) in the next day or two?
- Are there any signs of wear and tear where you don’t want visible (think near the crotch, or in the armpits, or near your breasts—basically any areas you don’t want strangers’ eyes on!)
- Are there any visible stains from food or drinks you failed to remove? Some items such as wine can make for too tough of a time to wash out!
- How do those shoes fit? Do they even fit anymore?
Think of the benefits, not the downsides
Sure, it can be devastating to find out your favourite t-shirt doesn’t fit you anymore, or that dress you bought last year doesn’t fit (and it looks like new and everything!). But think of the upsides when it comes to cleaning your closet, rather than the downsides:- You’re passing clothes you no longer need to people in need of help who do. Donating clothing to charity can make you feel great about your life (and giving to those in need is just a great thing to do in general!).
- You’re adding room to your closet for important things, not just clothes. Storage is always a welcome thing, and you’ll make more when you spring clean the closet!
- You may be saying goodbye to a part of your past, sure, but say hello to your future dressed up self! Some things from high school may not be worth holding onto as they did before. Plus, you’ll make room for new dresses and accessories!
