Winter means many things to everyone. For some, it means bundling up under a blanket with a hot drink and a book or the next TV show you want to binge-watch on Netflix. For us, it means cozy clothing to keep warm even when you go outside.
You wouldn’t think convertible wrap dresses and winter would mix, but who says they can’t? We certainly don’t think so! You don’t have to hide your beautiful self under several layers if you have a date night or a special party to go to (yes, they even happen in January!). Plus, February is the month of Valentine’s Day, and winter is still in full swing.
So, think of this as kind of a Valentine’s Day tip meets winter article! And without further ado, here are some of our tips on how you can wear and accessorize your wrap dress this winter without feeling left out in the cold!
Colour Basics
The rule of thumb for any dress you wear is that if it’s patterned, don’t accessorize it with another patterned piece of clothing; if it’s one solid colour, a pattern may look nice with it, or another solid colour that compliments the dress will work too. With this in mind, try using neutral colours with your wrap dress to really make the colours in it pop and stand out! Colour coordination can also help your wrap dress stand out when you have to remove your wintry accessories, which we’ll get more into later, whenever you step indoors.
Styling Tips
In terms of style for your wrap dress’s top, we recommend trying the halter or the reversed sweetheart for your Valentine’s Day night. Both of these styles allow you enough wiggle room to adjust your sleeves and cover your back if it gets too cold out. For back styles, you can easily adjust your wrap dress into a criss-cross shape, then unfold the strap cloths to create sleeves and stay warmer without losing your sexy edge. During the rest of winter you can style your dress so that your entire top half stays warm.
Try Wearing Floor-length
Obviously we don’t expect you to go out completely bare—even though the weather can be very mild in the Vancouver BC area in winter, there can still be pretty freezing temperatures! Add rain into the mix and you’ve got winter in BC that’ll make you go “Nope, no way I’m going out tonight.”
However, that doesn’t mean you can’t wear a dress period! Rather than putting on a midi-length or knee length convertible wrap dress, consider wearing a floor-length dress instead. This dress will keep your legs warm and your hosiery less obvious to the naked eye, especially if you’re attending a winter wedding or are part of the bridesmaid party and want to stay warm.
Pants
One of the best things about the wrap dress is you can wear it as a shirt too! Simply put on your pants, one leg at a time, and the dress will fall naturally into place. You can then adjust and style the top half of your dress as you deem appropriate, whether it’s going to work, traveling outside, going for a walk, or for any outdoor occasion.
Add a Coat
If you’re wondering what to wear over a wrap dress, basically any coat that you think would best suit it. After all, you don’t want to be freezing if you have to travel! Pick out a translucent rain jacket so that your dress will shine underneath while also protecting you from drizzling rain, or go with a coat that makes you feel sexy without exposing too much of your skin.
Hats
Naturally winter is the season of the toque here for us Canadians! Even when it’s mild, the cold can affect your ears, so be sure to cover your head up. If you want to wear your wrap dress with a toque, we recommend using the shirt style with pants so that you can be both comfortable and warm without losing your sense of fashion.
Scarves & Gloves
Because you just can’t have winter without them! If your wrap dress is a solid colour, go with a warm and fluffy scarf. Any gloves and mittens that match the scarf’s colour will add a greater sense of fashion to your looks, and colour coordination of solid colours with a patterned top or dress will help you stand out.
Don’t Forget Your Umbrella!
You never know when that light drizzle of rain will turn into a downpour! The weather in Coquitlam and Vancouver BC, while usually very mild, has its moments where the sky can turn very nasty and the rain can pour and become a monsoon. If you really have no choice except to go out in such poor conditions in your wrap dress, always bring an umbrella. You spent a lot of time choosing the wrap dress of your dreams, after all—a little rain may not hurt anybody, but a lot can sure hurt!
Add Some Sparkle
Who doesn’t love adding a little sparkle to their style? Buckles, sliders, and brooches are all great accessories to add some glimmer and glitter to your wrap dress, as well as provide you with even more options for styling.
As you can see there is no shortage of how to wear and accessorize your wrap dress, even when it’s winter! Have fun experimenting with your own sense of style. If you need help or a beautiful wrap dress to nail this style, browse our shop!
